(English)

My name is Dee, I was born in the UK and live in London where I work as
a network engineer.

I started learning about Buddhism a long time ago mainly from reading books and online resources. While this was helpful initially, I found learning this way inconclusive as there was so much information from many different schools which seemed never ending.

A few years ago I became a subscriber of Sunims YouTube channel and started to watch the Dharma talks regularly. There are many great videos that have helpful advice. I really like how Sunim uses analogies to explain things so that they are easier to understand. One memorable video that resonates with me is when Sumin talks about comparing ourselves to others, he explains why it's such a pointless habit to have and offers advice on how we can overcome it. I found this really meaningful as it helped me reduce my bad habit of making comparisons to others.

It was great to see how Dharma teachings could be applied to real life problems that people were facing each day. The advice presented was always explained well and I could relate to many of the people who asked questions. I always found the videos really helpful and comforting so I was really happy when I heard Jungto was starting a Dharma school that was available in English.

I want to be happy

Before joining Jungto Dharma school I had the tendency to overthink things and I would worry a lot about the past and future. I began to compare myself with others around me which made me feel different and useless. When I look back at this now I realize that I was trying to live up to my own unrealistic expectations and overestimating my potential. In my mind I may have thought that achievements would lead to happiness but in reality I was just treating life like some sort of competition, like a race where I would keep convincing myself that I'm in last place.

One thing that would bother me was the uncertainty of my future. I felt stuck in my job and was desperate for a change after living in the same routine for so long. There were loads of opportunities that felt out of my reach due to all of the qualities that I lacked.

This sometimes led to anxiety and feeling overwhelmed that affected all aspects of my life. I wanted to find a way to improve my wellbeing and to have more appreciation of all the things I take for granted.

I joined English Dharma School

I feel fortunate that the people in the Dharma group were so diverse, there was a mix of male and female members both young and middle-aged. We had members who lived in different parts of Europe and USA, they each had different backgrounds, cultures and unique life experiences.

The Jungto Dharma School helped me develop and challenge my way of thinking so I could see things in different perspectives. I realized that there are many viewpoints that are equally important in every situation and that truth is not absolute. I learnt that it's ok to be different and everyone deserves to be happy.

I didn't come across any major difficulties during the Dharma school however, there were times that I felt sharing was difficult as I'm still not used to talking about personal things openly but throughout the course I became much more accustomed to it.

Everyone in my Dharma group was so kind and I really enjoyed seeing them each week for the online meetings. I felt encouraged by their sharing and moved by their kindness and life experiences. They were each so empathetic and open with their sharing, I really miss them since the course ended and hope we can all meet again someday.

My first 108 prostrations

After the first part of introduction to Buddhism completed, I wanted to continue practicing so I registered for the 1000-day practice which I am still undergoing.

The first time I performed prostrations was during the Dharma School as part of the weekly exercises. It did feel strange at first and I was unsure if my posture was correct as I kept losing balance when getting up from a bow. Eventually I felt more comfortable and started to increase the amount of bows I could perform with time. There are still many days I have difficulty when performing the daily practice but it is generally to do with keeping my concentration and focus on the reflection as my mind sometimes gets distracted easily.

I'm still in the process of my first 1000 days practice. It's quite difficult some days because I don't want to wake up so early and on other days it's difficult to keep focused because of distractions. I do find that the practice helps me reflect on errors in my actions and thoughts that are not always apparent. Through this practice I'm starting to see how frequently I insist that I am right, or attribute things as "good" or "bad".

My daily practice

In the past I would often get annoyed at inconsiderate people, such as those that would bother others and be disrespectful. I usually suppressed my frustration but on a few occasions I got into arguments with people that I felt were rude. Now, it's easier to stay calm and not get caught up in my fixated view that I am right and they are wrong. Seeing things as only right and wrong, good and bad can make things worse if I don't allow room for my thoughts to adapt. I now have better awareness of my anger/frustrations and can stop myself getting into confrontations.

Overall I found so much value in the course and by the end of it I was worried about what I would do once it finished as I didn't want to stop with the progress I had made. Luckily there were opportunities to be involved in other Jungto activities and I joined the 1000-day practice for the first time. I also started joining the European weekly Dharma meetings with other Jungto members which I enjoy. I am getting more familiar with some of the people there, many of whom are members of Jungto that are or have been involved in various Jungto projects and activities. I really admire them and I'm so thankful that they make me feel welcome each time I join the meeting.

By performing daily practice I hope that I can reduce my bad habits and not get annoyed at others due to my own ignorance. I want to be more in control of my thoughts and emotions as to not cause others harm. In the future I would like to visit Jungto Dharma centre to attend a
lecture in person. I would also like to help others and volunteer for either a humanitarian or environmental cause that I can contribute to.

I'm really grateful to all the practitioners, for extending Jungto globally and making it possible for me to learn Dharma in a different language. I sincerely wish you all true happiness.

Hello Dee, You started the practice at around the same time as I started it. Your experience and mindset changed from the practice is so touching me. I just want to root for you. Happy for you.
